The Menshikov Palace
Erected between 1710 and 1722 by Giovanni Fontana and Gottfried Schadel as part of a spacious estate, the Menshikov Palace far exceeded in size and splendor all Saint Petersburg buildings of the time. Each storey of the façade is adorned with pilasters. There used to be an attic over the central part of the Menshikov Palace which was surmounted by sculptures. In spite of numerous alterations effected in the course of the 18th century, the palace has on the whole retained its original aspect. The interior decoration of some of the halls on the first floor has also been preserved inviolate.
Now the Menshikov Palace is a part of the Hermitage museum.
